Transformative Therapy & Consulting

Rooted in Healing. Led by Justice.

What is Rooted Soul?

Therapy and consulting practice offering trauma-informed services to those wanting to move beyond survival and live in alignment with their values.

This approach is grounded in feminist-multicultural and liberatory practices that honor intersectionality, lived experience, and the intelligence of the body. Frequently Asked Therapy Questions

  • Rooted Soul does not currently accept insurance. We may accept a limited number of insurance plans in the future. Please check back or reach out with questions.

  • Yes. Rooted Soul offers a limited number of sliding-scale slots based on financial need. If cost is a barrier, please reach out— will work to accommodate or offer referrals to other providers.

  • Both. Telehealth is available anywhere in Utah. In-person sessions are held in Salt Lake City.

  • Adults navigating the impacts of trauma, burnout, identity shifts, and systemic stress—especially purpose-driven professionals, caregivers, nonprofit leaders, creatives, and change-makers. This practice is culturally responsive and LGBTQIA+ affirming.

  • Sessions are grounded in safety and collaboration. While we may talk through what’s coming up in your life, we will move beyond traditional talk therapy. We make space to notice what’s happening in your body, especially when words feel limited or the nervous system is activated.

Depending on your needs and comfort, we may integrate grounding practices, breathwork, mindful movement, or moments of stillness to support regulation and reconnection. We might explore family patterns, cultural identity, trauma history, or the impact of systemic stress—and we’ll move at a pace that honors your agency and readiness.

At Rooted Soul, we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all approaches. Some sessions might feel spacious and reflective, while others may focus on skill-building or processing a specific experience. You’re always in charge of what we explore, and together we’ll co-create a space that feels as safe, supported, and empowering as possible.

Sonya draws from extensive clinical training, somatic education, and over two decades of experience working at the intersections of trauma, healing, and justice. You can read more about Sonya’s background here.

  • Yes. Sonya is trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a structured trauma-processing modality designed to support the integration of distressing or overwhelming experiences.

EMDR can be a powerful tool, but it’s not for everyone. It follows specific protocols and is only introduced when we’ve built a strong foundation of safety, stability, and mutual agreement. If we decide together that EMDR feels like a good fit, we will walk through each step and ensure the process is paced, supportive, and aligned with your needs.

For some people, other somatic or relational approaches may be more helpful, and that’s equally valid. There’s no one right way to heal, and we’ll work collaboratively to find what feels right for you.

  • Depth work benefits from ongoing support, but focused short-term work can help around specific issues. Get in Touch and we can discuss what makes sense for you.
