Trauma-Informed Therapy, Yoga & Consulting
Rooted in Healing. Led by Justice.
What is Rooted Soul?
Rooted Soul is a therapy, consulting, and trauma-informed yoga practice offering culturally responsive support for individuals, groups, and organizations seeking to move beyond survival and live in alignment with their values.
This work is grounded in a whole-person, bottom-up approach influenced by multicultural and liberatory practices. It honors the intelligence of the body, intersectionality, and lived experience. Drawing from evidence-based interventions, somatic practices, and ancestral knowledge, Rooted Soul supports collective healing and sustainable change.

-
Yes. Rooted Soul offers a limited number of sliding-scale slots based on need. Higher tiers sustain the practice and make reduced-rate services possible. This sliding scale embodies Rooted Soul’s commitment to healing justice, equity, and community care, reflecting our belief that individual and systemic healing go hand in hand. If cost is a barrier, please reach out— we will work to accommodate or offer referrals to other providers.

Sessions are grounded in collaboration and building resources. While we may talk through what’s coming up in your life, we will move beyond traditional talk therapy. We make space to notice what’s happening in your whole system, especially when words feel limited, or the nervous system is activated.
Depending on your needs and comfort, we may integrate grounding practices, breathwork, mindful movement, bilateral stimulation, or moments of stillness to support regulation and reconnection. We might explore family and relationship patterns, cultural identity, trauma history, or the impact of systemic stress. We’ll move at a pace that honors your readiness.
At Rooted Soul, we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all approaches. Some sessions might feel spacious and reflective, while others may focus on skill-building or processing a specific experience. You’re always in charge of what we explore, and together we’ll co-create a space that feels as supported and empowering as possible.
Sonya draws from extensive clinical training, somatic education, and over two decades of experience working at the intersections of trauma, healing, and justice. You can read more about Sonya’s background here.
-
Yes. Sonya is trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a structured trauma-processing modality designed to support the integration of distressing or overwhelming experiences.
EMDR can be a powerful tool, but it’s not for everyone. It follows specific protocols and is introduced by building a strong foundation of resources, stability, and mutual agreement. If we decide together that EMDR may be a good fit, we will walk through each step and ensure the process is paced, supportive, and aligned with your needs.
For some people, other somatic (body-based) or relational approaches may be more helpful, and that’s equally valid. There’s no one right way to heal, and we’ll work collaboratively to find what feels right for you.

Depth work benefits from ongoing support, but focused short-term work can help around specific issues. Connect and we can discuss what makes sense for you.
